Perspective

You Need A Love Support Team

It's February. You know that that means: Valentine's Day looms large (AKA "Fail-entine's Day" or "Single's Awareness Day").

In this edition, it's all about curating your personally customized "Cupid Crew". When you are seeking a special someone, you need a few close people on your Cupid Crew to check in with as you along the way. It doesn't change when you find someone. You will always need a safety network outside of you and your significant other.

It's okay if you have a small circle of close confidants. It does help if you find people in various circles in your life so that you don't drain out one person or group in exasperating or even exciting times.

While you don't have to send a formal invitation to join your team, it's helpful to have Cupid Crew members prepped with an understanding of what you expect in their mode of supporting you when you call upon them for support.

Case in point: My Cupid Crew members surely recall when I cried on their shoulders throughout some hard times when I was uncoupled and looking for a romantic partner. I know that at times, it became burdensome. So gradually, I diversified: instead of hitting up one person all the time, I "cycled" my venting and lamenting. I also learned the strengths of my Crew members. Some were good at listening, others at practical advice, and others offered sympathy and love in their own ways.

Practical Tactics

Where to Recruit Members:

  • Family members

  • Long-time friends

  • Members of your community (faith small group, members of a club or group you are in)

  • A trained professional therapist

  • Coworkers who are on a more friendship basis

Cupid Crew Qualities:

  • Have a record of trustworthiness with you.

  • Feel happy, not resentful to listen and offer what you're asking for.

  • Won't push unsolicited advice, undue judgment, or guilt on you.

  • Will speak honestly with you in kindness.

  • Will speak up and act if they think you are in real danger.

Having a back up team instills you with confidence to know that you're not alone, whether you're single or feel isolated in a committed partnership.
