Scavenger Hunts Lead to Treasure
Every Valentine's Day my dad would create a scavenger hunt for us that led to a treasure chest of chocolates, SweeTARTS, and chalky conversation hearts. As a teenage, I still enjoyed the game of riddle-clues that ended in a "pirate's booty". But I also started longing for a boyfriend. It was the start of a long, weary, and often, devastating quest for love that consisted of connections "riddled" with disappointment and "clueless" dates (myself also clueless at times.)
As an adult, Valentine's Day has remained dear to my heart. But that made it Single's Awareness Day for me. The few occasions I was coupled on Valentine's Day, disaster inevitably ensued.
Case in point:
Valentine's Day Disaster Highlights from my Sordid Past!
I dated a guy out of pity and broke up with him. (To be fair, it was either Valentine's Day or his birthday).
My beau and I got into a fender-bender (his new car)...and a fight.
Next year, same beau had me drive on the icy streets instead of sheltering at home during an ice storm. He laughed at the tragic part in a play we'd arrived to late... we got into a fight.
Numerous "Galentine's Days" and solitary movie rentals, devouring whole pepperoni pizzas and bottles of "2-Buck-Chuck".
A beau who called me "Treasure" in a different language revealed that I was not his treasure. We broke up on the 13th.
After several dates, a guy ghosted on me on the 12th...for a much cuter, younger model.
All Fail-entine's Days. But! The not-so-fun "scavenger hunt" did lead me to my bestestest sweetHEART, with now many cherished Valentine's Days memories in our trove.
Practical Tactics
Treasures Amongst the Fails
I'll never flippantly exclaim, "It was worth the wait!" I wish I found my prize much earlier in life.
It's still a "scavenger hunt" to discover the treasure buried within heart-wrenching experiences. I've unearthed some priceless gems. I hope these examples may spark something for you to find your own buried treasure from painful memories:
Don't settle for someone or something that you're not passionate about. You're not doing them any favors.
Don't be the consolation prize that someone else is settling for.
Things not clicking or working out could be a message: "This isn't the One, move on." (Not always, but possibly.)
Savor fond memories with beloved platonic friends who were there for you and brought joy.
Every clueless riddle is one clue closer to the bonanza.
An abundance awaits in the depths of the archives of your Fail-entine's misadventures, even if they didn't transpire on Valentine's Day (like so many of mine did). I hope this short list starts you thinking of gifts you can retrieve from your own Fail-entine's Days.
