Perspective — A Step Out of Stuck
Status quo can mean stability. But it can turn stagnant. We can assess if we need to establish "sameness" or change in areas of our lives.
For example, in your search for the right partner, if you're meeting good-but-not-the-One matches, keep doing the same thing. But if you detect negative patterns in your connections, switch dating tactics.
In partnership, as a new couple, you need to get in sync and create togetherness. But if you've spent years on the same page, it might be time to turn a new leaf and refresh the romance.
We lean into consistency out of fear, comfort, and sometimes wisdom. But consistency can also keep you from a wonderful adventure or treasure.
Since extreme sudden changes often land you back in the mire, just taking one step forward allows you find your footing and encourages you to take the next step.
Case in point: A fellow I know once met a woman online he enjoyed getting to know. But after a few dates with her, his mother passed away. His forgot about dating. But when his life returned to the daily grind, loneliness also returned. This lovely woman came to his mind. He took one step to email her to ask how she was doing. Fast forward: they have been happily married now for 15 years. One step turned into flying together through the years.
Practical Tactics — What Is One New Step For...You?
The first step is to determine what area you're stuck in. The next is to think of what one small step you can take to move ahead. It's not a commitment, it's an exploration, it's putting out a litmus test.
Some Examples:
For uncoupled seeking partnership:
Self-reflect why you're not actively dating/seeking or why you're encountering a dating pattern. Write it down.
Give a "like" to someone online (low-risk, putting out feelers) then move on, don't get invested.
If you're not online, create an online dating profile on a Word document. (Revisit the free download or ask me for it if needed).
Search for special interest activities to explore your passions (you might meet someone by getting involved, too).
For couples who need newness:
Have you wanted to bring something up with your partner? Start by rehearsing what you're going to say.
Ask a curious question instead of making a request or demand in order to understand your partner's view point.
Plan a day trip instead of a cross-continental venture.
Cut out a $10 item out of your regular budget.
Obviously, this is far from an exhaustive list. It's just a few prompts. What's your next step forward?
