Perspective
Let Love Come to Your Rescue
Imagine that you stand before a 50 ft cliff. Behind you rises a high sheer wall with no way around it. You have to leap. You know that the water below is deep, warm. A powerful lifeguard team awaits below to help you into their rescue boat that will take you back to safety.
When we end connections or go through relationship stressors, the same fight-or-flight signals surge through our nervous systems as when we face stakes presented in this imaginary scenario, causing abnormal impulses, anxiety, depression, loss or gain of appetite.
Many of us have been taught to help ourselves. But the when the adage, "God helps those who help themselves" is taken out of context, it isolates us. We scour the Internet for pertinent advice articles. We meditate, we shop, we binge-watch Netflix.
There comes a time, however, when we cannot help ourselves. We cannot make ourselves better. The "Love yourself" part of "Love your neighbor as..." isn't possible.
We have come to the end of ourselves. We have no resources left of our own making.
We need to receive love. Receiving love and help from someone else, and trust-falling into the arms of care from others alone can restore us.
Case in point: One of my epic Fail-entine's Day disasters involved a guy I wasn't even attracted to dismissing me for a younger, cuter, chiquita. Still, it felt like someone injected me with poison. I ran to my small group friends, who metaphorically caught me in their nonjudgmental arms and comforted me. Their love began my healing process.
Practical Tactics
When & How to Trust-Dive
Know that you aren't always going to be the one helping; someone will benefit from your allowing them to help you.
Ask for help from people who won't judge you.
Let go of your defenses.
Receive help without feeling guilty or bad about putting other people out.
Recognize that it's not forever. There are seasons in life and you will regain strength.
Don't feel the need to reciprocate. The people in your life aren't there for you because they expect something in return.
But do thank them and honor them when you are up to it. Let them know how their support made a difference.
No one wants to feel so desperate that it's like the cliff-dive is your only option. But when you do have that rescue team, that Cupid Crew on the ready for you, you know how glorious it is when you have a safety net of people that you know you can trust.
