*Sowing Brought Me Growing?

Perspective – You Reap What You Sow

The phase is often contextualized as a warning, "you'll get your comeuppance for your wrong-doings." But it also means that if you plant a certain seed, it will bear fruit after its kind. (Like babies!)

In the same way, if you want a certain kind of relationship to blossom, you need to "sow seeds" to reap the relationship with the characteristics you desire:

  • Relationship Type - Life-partner, Marriage, Marriage with children

  • Qualities in a Partner - Kind, generous, funny, happy, ambitious

  • Relationship Activities - TV shows, adventures, hiking, dancing

There are infinite varieties of seeds and their produce and infinite combinations of coupling.

You can "plant a seed" that turns into an amazing partnership.

Case in point: In the movie Kung-fu Panda. The slovenly-but-lovable panda Shifu stuffs his mouth with peaches from the Sacred Peach Tree of Heavenly Wisdom, arguing that he can control the outcome of a seed's growth. But the sage turtle Oogway explains the illusion of control: "No matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach."

Practical Tactics – What You'll Sow, Which Field to Go (to)

In light of this bit of "Heavenly Wisdom", consider what elements of the outcome we can control and which we can't when "sowing relationship seeds."

Examples in Dating & Relationships

You can control:

  • Qualities you "require" in mate selection. Or accepting your partner as they are (or at least working on it).

  • Self-reflection, personal growth, and appropriate self-care.

  • Where to seek potential partners (which dating apps, bars, clubs, etc). Or which activities to engage in with your partner that foster connection, affection, and communication.

  • Presenting yourself honestly and attractively in person, photos, posts, and messages and in a life-partnership, as much as possible. (Let's face it. When you live together you're going to see each other's rustic appearance on a regular basis.)

  • Conducting yourself with boundaries and kindness.

But you can't control:

  • Who you find in dating endeavors or forcing your partner to change.

  • When you find the right person.

  • Making the other take responsibility for what you think they've done wrong.

  • If they absolutely fit into every category on your soulmate "wish list".

  • How the other person feels, behaves, or decides.

In one of the chapters of my book Your Love Breakthrough, I discuss this idea of intentionality more in the chapter "Pound the Pavement" vs. "Sing Out Loud". If you're interested, the order links are below.
