Perspective – Blossoming Longevity

Sometimes people hold off on really going for it, really planting seeds in the right, fertile soil, because they're afraid. They think if it's not going to come out as ideal, then why bother? After all, farmers can plow, sow, and irrigate the fields, only to have a drought, a flash storm, or pests destroy their crops.

You do have power, though. You can choose seeds that become short-lived flowers. You could also select seeds that grow into an oak or a perennial flower. You can research the kind of soil and conditions that would support the growth for the best possible outcome, and choose those conditions.

The same is true for relationships--where to search for them, where and how to cultivate them.

An absolute "perfect" long-term relationship on this planet isn't possible--unless you change the definition of "perfect". A perfect long-term relationship does "cycle". There will be seasons of frustration, pruning, growth, having fun, or basking in beauty. Roots of love grow deeper, resources deepen. Growth stretches upward, and benefits contribute to those around, families, personal communities, and the world.

Case in point: Colin and I were wed under an enormous fig tree, a landmark in West Los Angeles on the property of St. John's Presbyterian church. Pastor Steve, who officiated, gave the most apt message, describing the tree's roots going down to a deep underground river that gave it life to grow in the L.A. climate, surviving 150+ years through drought and fire. It is now guarded and trimmed to grow its fruit and highlight its shape. It reflects the Celtic Tree of Life, a symbol that inspires our marriage.

The imagery reminds us to dig our roots deeper when times get tough, to lift our heads and hearts up to the vastness and openness to which we aspire to grow toward, together.

Practical Tactics – Passion that Develops Lasting Fruit

The intensity and authenticity of passion arises from a deep-seated belief that endures, grows, and thrives through hardships and victories.

Being convinced about someone or something allows you to:

  • Dig your heels in, sow seeds, and plant your feet on solid ground.

  • Passion allows a vision of what is possible to bloom.

  • If you believe this vision can be realized, you can commit to sustaining and nurturing it through rough patches.

  • This perseverance doesn't make a magical manifestation, but it enables it and supports the vision's progress.

  • "Manifesting" doesn't mean you point-for-point carve the end product. It's "co-creating" and delighting in the other person flourishing in an unexpected way.

A lasting partnership is like a tree bearing fruit and the fruit has seeds that multiple and nourish the world.\
