Perspective– What Cuffing Season Means.

If “Cuffing Season” is a new term for you, no, it’s not Fifty Shades of Gray-adjacent. It refers to a cold-weather phenomenon that starts in October.

Frosty air isolates, heightens lonely feelings. Our urges for a snuggle-buddy naturally burgeon. Many uncoupled folks find a partner to stick with--for a while. But when ice melts in March, some hearts grow cold. Hand cuffs often slip off, partners part ways.

For others, it’s an initiation into a life-long romance.

People who experience these more intense feelings during Cuffing Season often gravitate toward online dating.

Case in point: I met a couple who had each been online for a while with no success and both of them had gotten discouraged and gave up. But when the holidays rolled around, they each took advantage of a free trial offered by a niche site—out of pure loneliness and a feeling of "Why not?". Neither had local family or plans. And so they met for coffee. That coffee date turned into a “cuffing” partnership that outlasted the chilly season and blossomed into a marriage.

Practical Tactics

Capturing Cuffing Season for Yourself.

  • If you are feeling loneliness and longing, consider this seasonal curiosity as a potential opportunity.

  • Reflect about what you ideally want and what you are open to. Know that connecting with someone who isn’t looking for something life-long is more likely to end come springtime. Are you open to just one-date wonders (or some-date wonders)? Committed short-term? Long-term only?

  • Write in your online dating profile what you are open to and what you are ultimately looking for.

  • Make meeting new prospects a winter adventure.

  • Whether you get “cuffed” or not, be “cuffed” to feeling hope that the right One will enter your life at the right time.

  • Take small steps toward searching for that special person.
